Kate Walsh Visits David Letterman

Kate Walsh stops by The Late Show with David Letterman on Tuesday to chat about her upcoming spin-off of the award-winning Grey's Anatomy. The Private Practice series premiere - "In Which We Meet Addison..." - airs tonight!

Kate on Letterman

On David Letterman's talk show, Kate Walsh talked about the show, and also about building up the wall at her home in Los Feliz, Calif., for privacy.

In response to this action, Kate apparently received landscaping tips from members of the celebrity news media! One of them left a note in her mailbox:

"We noticed you're building up your wall, but we just want to tell you that you really don't have to. You can just put some more shrubs in and then we can't really get any good pictures. Signed, The Paparazzi."

Well, that's nice at least. Here's hoping Kate Walsh finds a good way to keep her private life private... and find success with Private Practice!

Private Practice Makes Perfect For Kate Walsh

It's Sexual Harassment Day at Private Practice.

No, really. The cast and crew are less than thrilled about having to attend a studio-required lecture on the perils of inappropriate compliments.

Kate Walsh, who endured the same seminars during her three years playing Dr. Addison Montgomery on Grey's Anatomy, is overjoyed that the job of doing press for her new show has provided her an excuse to slip away.

Opening the door to her modest air-conditioned trailer, Walsh reaches into her refrigerator to offer bottled water to a correspondent from USA Today.

Kate Walsh Mug Shot Within a half-hour she has downed two bottles. Keeping herself hydrated, along with weekly acupuncture appointments, has helped keep her focused.

But Kate Walsh concedes she's not yet totally secure at her new TV home.

"I told my husband, 'I haven't really found my groove yet, and I've been playing Addison for almost three years!"

Walsh's husband (of just two weeks at the time of this interview) is film executive Alex Young, who reminded her that Private Practice is new, she says.

"A whole new cast. All new scripts. A new location and crew."

OFF TO WORK

Kate's new job is at Oceanside Wellness Center, a medical co-op in Santa Monica, Calif., a more casual environment than her previous place of employment.

Walsh's morning commute takes her a few miles west of ABC Studios, where Grey's Anatomy shoots, to Raleigh Studios.

Raleigh is comparatively small, a studio lot across right from the mammoth Paramount Studios, in between Melrose Avenue's hip, trendy stretch and its section populated by liquor stores and massage parlors.

It's a fitting locale for Private Practice, a show that similarly lies between the hip and the unknown, and with so much to prove.

Private Practice: No Grey's Anatomy Clone

Although Private Practice was born out of ABC's hit medical "dramedy," Grey's Anatomy, series stars Kate Walsh and Tim Daly assure us that their upcoming show is quite different from its parent, as it will not only introduce viewers to new faces, but to some fresh storylines as well.

"It feels different, [but] it doesn't feel like we're consciously making it different," Walsh, best known as Dr. Addison Montgomery, told ET.

"Some scenes feel the same in some ways and then totally different in other ways because it's a whole new cast of characters... they are all completely new."

Tim Daly, who will appear on Private Practice as Dr. Pete Wilder, echoed Kate Walsh's statement, telling ET, "We're not Grey's Anatomy... We're a different cast, we're different actors; we have different lines and different professions."

The public first caught sight of the new medical drama when an extended episode of Grey's Anatomy introducing the new show aired in May.

Tension Rises

In the backdoor pilot of Private Practice, viewers got their first glimpse of Daly, Amy Brenneman (Judging Amy), Paul Adelstein (Prison Break), Chris Lowell (Veronica Mars), and Taye Diggs (Kevin Hill).

Merrin Dungey appeared in the pilot as Naomi, the wife of Diggs' Sam Bennett, but her character is now going to be played by Audra McDonald (Kidnapped). KaDee Strickland (The Wedding Bells) joined the cast late.

Private Practice, scheduled to debut next week, will follow Addison as she settles into her new life in Los Angeles. An all-new special promoting both Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice airs tonight on ABC!

Kate Walsh in GLAAD Public Service Announcement

In a message of tolerance, Private Practice star Kate Walsh and her Grey's Anatomy co-stars (along with other familiar ABC TV faces) appear in this new public service announcement for a GLAAD campaign. Here's the video:

Kate Walsh Ready to Realize Her Dreams

Getting a job on a hit drama is a big deal.

Getting your own show is almost unfathomable.

When Kate Walsh joined the cast of Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Derek Shepherd's wife, never dreaming she'd become a regular, she would have considered starring in its spin-off, Private Practice, something out of a dream world.

But it's very real, and she is already hard at work in production. Here is what Kate Walsh had to say about Private Practice to Canadian Magazine...

"Honestly, there is pressure but the pressure is eclipsed by the fact that we are so busy and I'm just kind of constantly focused on the next thing in front of me," Kate said of her much-anticipated new show.

"At this point, we are three days into shooting our first episode. So I'm thinking more about my 5:30 call tomorrow morning, and all of my medical scenes."

On Her Own

Private Practice has Walsh's Addison Montgomery move from Seattle to L.A. to join a private, seaside wellness center. Although her doctoring skills remain top notch, her personal life remains dramatic.

"I think that's the dichotomy there and I think that's the interesting thing about a lot of the characters in this show. Professionally, these characters on Private Practice all have attained their dream. They are all choosing of their own volition to have a practice, a co-op and they have all of this choice."

Kate Walsh Basks in Wedding Afterglow

Still basking in the afterglow of her amazing nuptials, like most brides, Kate Walsh wishes her wedding could have been a never-ending affair.

"I had an amazing time," the Private Practice star told Extra in an interview at the end of last week. "When you walk down the aisle, that was pretty powerful. To have a church full of everybody that is near and dear to me, and that I love and that loves us ... and seeing his face!"

Kate and Alex Kiss

Kate and Alex share a kiss at the Emmys last night.

Walsh, as we know, married movie executive Alex Young, 36, over Labor Day weekend, with the couple exchanging vows before 100 guests - including a handful of Walsh's former Grey's Anatomy co-stars - Katherine Heigl, Sara Ramirez, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, T.R. Knight and Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy's creator).

Having now experienced her her big day, Kate Walsh says "I see why people have week-long weddings," she says. "Let's just keep it going."

As for recent rumors that Walsh is expecting?

"A baby, no. We might get a new puppy, though," Kate says. "For now, we are just excited to spend time with each other."

And for the premiere of Private Practice a week from Wednesday!

Kate Walsh, Private Practice in Entertainment Weekly

"Oh, God. Are you kidding me?"

Unfortunately for Dr. Addison Montgomery, the answer to that question is no. Inside the slick offices of Oceanside Wellness — the setting for ABC's highly anticipated Grey's Anatomy spin-off, Private Practice (debuting at 9 p.m., September 26) — Addison (Kate Walsh) is shocked that her pregnant patient has requested a holistic birth from sexy alternative-medicine practitioner Dr. Pete Wilder (played by the sexy Tim Daly).

She nervously pivots in her scrubs.

"People have babies in hospitals," says Addison. "That's normal! This is..."

"A change of pace?" asks Pete.

You could say that.

When Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes first conceived Private Practice, a drama-comedy about a consortium of sexy, not-getting-younger medical careerists in Santa Monica, she had one hope for her second baby: that it not look identical to her first.

"I feel it's lighter than Grey's Anatomy," Rhimes tells Entertainment Weekly, which features Walsh and Private Practice on the cover of its fall TV preview. "It's got all the drama without the surgery! Grey's has always been high school kids with scalpels. These people are a little bit more grown-up."

Funny, Walsh isn't feeling like the picture of maturity right now.

Outside a hideaway café in Los Feliz, Calif. — not far from the house she shares with her new husband, Alex Young, a 20th Century Fox exec — she's arriving 30 minutes late for a meeting.

Rushing through the door, the Private Practice star apologizes repeatedly and sheepishly admits she forgot her wallet.

The 39-year-old actress mutters something about a bad impression, but that's hardly the case, given the commotion she's caused.

A Post-Wedding Interview With Kate Walsh

The lovely star of Private Practice, Kate Walsh, strapped on her blue bikini and enjoyed an afternoon of lounging by the pool with movie executive husband Alex Young Friday in Los Angeles.

Kate, 39, and Alex, 36, tied the knot Saturday, September 1, in the town of Ojai, Calif., north of Los Angeles. Here are some excerpts from an interview with Kate Walsh in this week's OK! magazine:

OK: How does it feel to be married?

Kate Walsh: To be Kate Walsh-Young? Suddenly calm. We are so happy and blissed out. You think as a performer you'd be able to imagine, but there's really nothing like it. It's profound.

OK: How did the weekend go?

Kate Walsh: I've had a 10-mile smile. We had an unexpected heat wave and there was a blackout during the reception dinner, but fortunately there was a backup generator! It's just a lesson in life. You can only plan so much.

OK: Any other last-minute hitches?

Kate Walsh: It was so hot in the church, and I felt faint. I was like, I think I need to drink some water. So I walked out to rehydrate. I walked back in, picked up the microphone, and said: "Hey, everybody! I'm back!" The gospel choir sang "Hallelujah."

OK: How did Alex propose?

Alex Young: We were at a beautiful restaurant called Gary Danko. I had the ring with me. Butterlies are a big theme in Kate's life and in our life. We're sitting there and the appetizer came out in the shape of a butterfly...
Kate Walsh: It was kind of ridiculous, actually. It was a tuna tartar with wasabi antennae!
Alex Young: I found myself starting to talk about what Kate means to me...
Kate Walsh: And then I realized, ‘Oh! This is it!'
Alex Young: I pulled out the ring, and it was just one of those great moments.
Kate Walsh: Before, he asked my brother's permission. Which was really wonderful.

Kate Walsh & Alex Young Make it Official

After just over a month of dating, and just over three months of being engaged, Kate Walsh and Alex Young officially tied the knot over the weekend.

The wedding of Walsh and Young took place Saturday at the Ojai Presbyterian Church in Ojai, Calif., and the reception was at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa after.

A lavish reception was scheduled to follow at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa's Casa Elar, a Spanish-style estate where guests enjoyed sit-down dinners.

Many of Kate Walsh's Grey's Anatomy co-stars, including Katherine Heigl and fiance Josh Kelley, as well as T.R. Knight, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Justin Chambers and his wife Keisha, along with Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice creator Shonda Rhimes, were in attendance.

Married!

Kate Walsh is gearing play her Grey's Anatomy character, Addison Montgomery, on a spin-off series entitled Private Practice (as we all know) September 26.

Like most brides, Kate experienced the occasional meltdown as she got ready for the big day - a wedding she planned very quickly, to boot!

Just last week, the busy TV star told Entertainment Tonight that with Private Practice set to get underway soon and her engagement to Alex Young, "I'm living a very good dream."

Young, 35, is a production executive at 20th Century Fox. His proposal to Kate in May was discovered by reporters who spotted her wearing an engagement ring at a television event. The two went public at a Barack Obama fund raiser.
